Two Key Success Skills Take Action Now And Be Bold Enough To Talk

I am writing this article to cement two key success skills in my own mind as well as yours. They are so important that they are worth thinking about every single day.

Mike Chen, the twenty year old internet guru, and Mark Joyner, his mentor both agree that the ‘ability to take immediate powerful action’ is more important than any other skill to achieve success on the internet.

They argue that it is better to have a mediocre plan today than a perfect plan tomorrow. Obviously a perfect plan will achieve more but too often people fail to act while they are busy thinking of the perfect plan or simply waiting for it to come to them.

People will often wait for the ‘best’ day to start taking action on some project or other. The best day is today. Give yourself permission to start today. You don’t have to wait and if, for some good reason, you do have to wait, start taking action on something else while you are waiting. This will put you on the fast track to achieving your goals.

A poor plan executed fairly well is a success. All we need to do is act and not waste time worrying about whether we are doing the right thing.

Every moment you are thinking: Are we doing the right thing? you are not doing things and are not getting results. If you are not getting results (good or bad) you are going nowhere.

What if your plan does not work? You will be no worse off and you will, like Edison, have discovered another path to avoid. If, like Edison, you do not give up, you will eventually succeed.

Mark Joyner states (and I agree) that amazing things happen when you start taking action. People and mighty forces will come to your aid.

You may be thinking: It’s too late; I should have taken action ten years ago. Mark suggests getting into your time machine and moving ten years into the future. In ten years time will you be looking back to today and wishing you had taken action today? You and I have another chance. Today can be the first day of the next ten action packed years.

Some people get pleasure from just thinking about doing something. How much more pleasure would they get if they added action to their dreams?

The whole world is full of dreamers who are always waiting for something to happen before they get started on that path to make things happen. If you wait for some one else to inspire you to start, you are putting your future in the hands of someone else. That is not a good idea. What if they don’t arrive?

Many Jacobites waited wistfully for Bonnie Prince Charlie to return before they would take action. He never did. He was over the sea in France and never returned to claim his kingdom.

I am a classic ‘wait till later’ person. I even delay listening to audios that I know will teach me key skills. I fail to watch videos that will bring me success. That is why I need this article as much as any one else. Action can be something as simple as taking out a video about internet marketing or whatever and watching it carefully.

Another great success tip is this: Be bold enough to talk to people - to network. Of course people may ignore you or even slap you in the face but if you talk boldly and with confidence that is unlikely.

You will feel good after you have spoken up. I remember years ago standing on a bench in the dinner hall of Pembroke College, Cambridge and suggesting to the amazed undergraduate diners that they take the words of Jesus about his second coming seriously. Some people did not like this but to my surprise, many did and I had a full house at my bible study group the following week.

More importantly, when I look back on my days at Cambridge, this one action is the one I am most glad I took. I have seldom felt so good.

If you are bold enough to risk rejection you will be able to network and leverage the skills and support of other people. Whatever happens, you will feel good about taking bold action.

Action must often take place in the face of criticism and negativity. Just don’t quit and you will usually be proved right in the end.

So then, don’t just sit there and wait for something good to happen. Take action and make it happen. Create your plan or system and start doing it and doing it until a better plan comes to mind.

Be bold and speak to people without fear. The worst they can do is say No. You and I may be surprised by how often they will say Yes.

Recently I started walking 2-3 miles three times a week to supplement my gym exercise and aerobics. I had seen people walking with poles and I was impressed with their energy and graceful movement. After doing some research about the effectiveness of the poles, I decided to get a pair for both my husband and me. There is a wide variety of features and price tags. I wanted cork handles to help manage sweaty palms, hand straps to secure poles to my hands, easy adjustment, quality construction and durability, reasonable price. These poles had it all PLUS a bag to carry them in, extra "feet" to attach on varied terrain, and — most importantly — a GREAT PRICE. The poles are exactly as advertised and I have gotten used to using them. They are supposed to help burn at least 20% more calories during my walk. Burn, babies, burn!

Work Life Balance: Work Life A Balancing Act

Australians are loosing their laidback, carefree reputation, as we continue to work longer hours, exercise less and neglect our leisure and family time.

Recent research indicates that 67 per cent of Australian professionals spend at least 20 hours a week thinking about their job when they should be relaxing, and less than half take their entitled annual leave.

Why is juggling work and life priorities an increasingly difficult challenge for many people?

Could it be we are trying to pack more and more into our busy lives?

Or is it the fact we are now so overloaded with information that our attention span is getting shorter and shorter as we strive to wade through the deluge of messages now coming at us in a range of forms.

The Gartner group has found that we spend on average an hour a day dealing with emails and that only includes work related communication.

We are creating unnecessary stress for ourselves, which is taking a heavy toll on our families, not to mention our health.

Is this due to the information rich society we now live in?

Marketers in the US now know the average teenager is exposed to more than 3000 discreet advertising messages each day and by the time they have reached 18 they will have seen more than 10 million.

How do you manage family commitments while enhancing your career and dealing with all this increased clutter?

Well, most people are aware of their tendency to overload on work or information but simply don?t know what to do to get their life back to a healthy balance.

Being successful isn?t only about your career and your possessions, it?s about waking up every day and feeling good about the person you are and the life that you have created.

Many people are searching for ways to achieve positive and lasting change both in and out of work.

As Paul Valery said early in the last century the trouble with the future is - it isn’t what it used to be.

The reality is many people are now living out someone else?s life dreams without leaving the comfort of their own lounge room. Why renovate your house or makeover your garden, when you can fantasise and watch someone else do it on TV for you?

If you find yourself in this twilight zone you are not alone. Perth has more sunshine than any other capital yet Western Australians watch on average 14 hours a week of television.

Most people spend more time watching TV than taking time to create positive changes in their lives.

Life is not a rehearsal so why not step up and make a difference?

Take the example of two Perth primary school girls; Sarah Duff and Sarah Poggioli both aged 11 years. They raised enough money to hire a plane to fly over their school pulling a banner with the following message: believe you can reach your goals, then you can.

It is amazing how children can help put life into perspective.

So what are the secrets to a healthy work life balance in a busy and demanding world? Here are the Top 5 ways you can get the life you deserve.

1.Work at being an optimist and take action. Take a positive attitude to life, get out and do things. Make things happen and take action.

2.Have strong self-belief. Believe in your potential to create the life you really want for you and your family.

3.Exercise regularly and eat well. Your physiology directly influences the quality of your life.

4.Visualise happy endings, schedule fun, and keep life simple. Make time to enjoy life. To laugh. To take time out. 5.Find perspective. Take the helicopter view to see the big picture and delegate if you can?t do it all yourself.

How To Introduce Creativity Innovation And Changing?

Creativity, innovation and change begin with the top team if possible, i.e. the leadership group. All individuals in that team need to get clarity about their own beliefs and values and the role they wish to play in life, be it work life or home life.

Behaviours need to align with those personal values and beliefs; otherwise you can?t function as a human being. In business, behaviours need to model personal values and beliefs consistently; otherwise the other people in the organization will simply get confused, and low levels of trust will be created.

Communication strategies such as mission statements, vision statements and statements of values from an important part of this process. However, they are only labels and as such are superficial. The important part of these statements is how they are represented inside people?s minds. The top team?s representations of those messages will be communicated through behaviour. Once the senior team has completed this initial task of establishing their own sense of themselves, and modeling this in the context of the business, the journey rolls on to the next layer.

The next layer in the business needs to do the same piece of work, identifying with clarity their own beliefs and values and the behaviours that support these. This will be done in the context of their home life and the business, and in the context of the messages being delivered from the leadership team. Everyone in the next layer will identify their way of making the values of the business real, and it will be communicated through their behaviour. Because the sense of understanding of what the business and its values are about will be very deep and internal to each person, it means that individuals can have flexibility to communicate message differently. However, these differences will all be aligned within a core context of business values.

The leadership team can have confidence that people will be working in a common way yet with flexibility so that, instead of robots, you have heroes who can use their talents and capabilities.

The hatchet is good. The knife was not properly sharpened, after I sharpened it, a good knife. The sheath is bad, it can not hold the knife securely, hetcht part is OK.

I really didn’t expect this product to be as good quality as it was… After a thorough inspection, I decree this product to be of high quality while "held in my hands". (I can’t wait to chop some stuff and find out.) The picture obviously leaves much to be desired, but the whole thing actually looks better than the picture. However, I wonder why the brand I received is actually Smith & Wesson instead of Schrade? No worries though, both brand names are equal to me (whatever). If these tools performs as well as they look, this is a an absolute bargain, and I totally recommend buying it. But if it breaks… CURSE YOU!!! (lol, j/k) (NOT REALLY!)

Joy In Simple Things

It is Friday Morning and very close to Christmas now. I didn’t sleep very well last night. I had a lot on my mind. Several of you have emailed me about how difficult this time of year is for you. I can understand that. What I find the most difficult about this season is the darkness. The sun rises here around 8 o’clock in the morning and sets before 5 pm. It is a very short day with very little light. Sunday will be the shortest day of the year, the day with the most darkness. I like to think that it is uphill after that. That each new day will bring more and more light. That things will get better and better.

I am a morning person and some days I think that the light will just never come. Sometimes the darkness scares me. I think this time of year brings up a lot of feelings that we don’t really have to deal with in the Spring and Summertime. Deep seated feelings of sadness and even despair. It is not fashionable these days to talk about that. But I do think that there comes a time when we really do have to feel those things. Really feel them, not dwell on them, but feel them, share them if we need to and then let them go. There will always be more feelings that surface as long as we are in these human bodies, much like the peeling of an onion. It is part of life. Part of being human. It helps to know that we are not alone. That others are feeling the same way. Not because misery loves company, but because we are all connected at a very deep level and as we have the courage to heal ourselves, we heal each other.

Several years ago I spent two weeks in the Arctic, ninety miles from the North Pole at Christmas time. The Arctic is a very desolate place. There are NO trees. Only ocean and flat land. There was no light at all except for about 1/2 hour a day. I don’t know how I survived it. I felt as though I was dying inside. Not to see the light or even one tree for two long weeks. There were some wonderful experiences during the two weeks like being 3 feet away from the most beautiful polar bear I had ever seen and watching the playful Arctic fox from my window. But when it was over and I arrived home, I literally ran to the first tree I could find, fell to my knees and cried.

There are many sad things going on right now in the world and you would have to be ice cold not to be affected by them in some way. This morning I sat for awhile on my balcony and watched the sun rise with a cup of tea and a warm blanket. It was a simple thing but I felt profound joy in doing it. I think that is what keeps me going. Somehow I am able through all the difficult times along this journey to find the joy in simple things.

I wish the same for you, that today you are able to find JOY in simple things and please remember to give yourself permission to feel whatever you need to feel. Do it with loving kindness. I wish you Godspeed on your journey, my dear and precious friends.

Amazon.com Product Description

Boasting a compact main compartment that measures a mere 3,696 cubic inches, the Teton Wilderness 55 internal frame backpack is ideally sized for the light backpacker or young camper. Comfort-wise, the Wilderness 55 is outfitted with dual aluminum stays that adjust to the shape of your back, along with contoured shoulder, lumbar, and waist pads. In addition, the height of the shoulder straps is adjustable, helping the pack accommodate a wide range of torso lengths. The upshot is a well-fitting, lightweight pack (4.5 pounds without gear) that won’t put undue stress on your back and shoulders even after a full day of hiking.

On the interior, the pack holds a modest amount of gear in its top-loading main compartment and distinct sleeping bag compartment. Also present are several smaller pouches–a pair of side zippered pockets, side and mesh front pockets, and a top zippered pocket, to be precise–for storing such items as Swiss Army knives, snacks, and mini flashlights. And as with any good hiking pack, the Wilderness 55 includes a padded water bladder pocket for trail hydration. The design concludes with a rain fly that keeps your gear dry in wet conditions.

Amazon.com Backpack Guide
Finding the Right Backpack
For extended trips into the backcountry, there’s no getting around the fact that you’ll have to carry life-sustaining supplies on your back. Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping for a backpack:

Internal vs. External
Up until late 1970’s, external frame packs–which consist of an exposed, lightweight metal frame attached to a fabric pack-bag–were the only thing going. In recent years, though, packs that place the support structure of the pack inside the pack, known as internal frame packs, have boomed in popularity.

The good news about internal frame packs is that they hold the weight of your load close to your body, making it easier to maintain your balance on uneven terrain. Meanwhile, internals provide stiffness and support, but they are not completely rigid, which makes them more flexible when you’re doing active sports. With the added flexibility comes a high degree of compressibility, meaning you can use the pack’s compression straps to cinch down your load and keep items from shifting and throwing you off balance. Internals also sport slimmer shapes that allow for more arm movement in all directions–another big plus for off-trail bushwhackers, skiers and climbers. Last but not least, internal frame packs offer a greater range of adjustability in the shoulder harness and hip-belt than external frame packs.

There are some negatives for internals. First, once packed, it can be difficult to grab needed items out of them quickly. And because internal frame packs consolidate the load into a single, body-hugging unit, proper packing is very important. To distribute the weight properly, you should pack your heaviest items close to your back and in the middle portion of the pack-bag. Plan on getting a sweaty back with an internal, too, given the fact that they are pressed right against you. Finally, internal frame packs are priced higher than external models.

External frame packs are very good at focusing the weight of a load directly to the right place: your load-loving hips. While internals, when properly packed, do this effectively, too, you can always rest assured that an external will distribute the load evenly, no matter how unevenly packed it may be. Externals also offer easy access to your gear via multiple, easily-accessible compartments. Plus, because externals don’t situate the load directly against your back, you’ll enjoy far more air flow. Finally, if you’re on a budget, or you’re buying for a growing child, externals are more affordable.

If you plan on hiking on easy to moderate trails and you don’t need a lot of body movement, you’ll probably be fine with an external. But because externals are so rigid and inflexible, challenging trails or any kind of off-trail pursuit can become painful and frustrating. Also know that your balance is far more compromised with an external frame pack during activities like stream crossings and hops through talus fields.

Packs for Shorter Trips
In addition to backpacks designed for overnight trips, rucksacks are great for day-trips, warm-weather one-nighters, single-day ski trips, or fast alpine assaults. Some rucksacks blur the line between backpack and rucksack with integrated internal supports and sophisticated hip belts and shoulder harnesses. Choose a pack in this category based on your intended use. Short day hikers don’t need an internal frame, while climbers and skiers with heavier loads likely do.

Sizes and Capacities
Packs in the 3,000 cubic inches and lower category are good for day hikes or overnighters in warm weather with minimal gear. Packs in the 3,000 to 4,000 cubic inch range are good for one- or two-night trips in colder weather. If you’re going to be out for up to three days, look for a pack in the sub-4,000 cubic inch range. Choose a pack with 5,000-6,000 cubic inches for week-long outings. And finally, for trips lasting a week or more, you’ll need something in the 6,000-plus cubic inch category. Keep in mind, though, that bigger packs weigh more, and since every ounce counts, you’ll want to choose a pack that offers just enough space for your outings and no more.

I bought this backpack for my girlfriend and took it three weeks to south east Asia, no complaints what so ever! This pack is not that big, so its very usefull for short trips (one to two weeks), however for a tall man (6 feet or more) it can be a little short. For my girlfriend it was fine and fit her clothes for almost all the trip. The attached rain fly is very usefull. Regarding materials and quality, I would say it is durable and likely to come with us for more trips! For its price, a very good backpack.

Review date : 2008-08-01
This is a pretty good backpack but it’s just too small.
The fit is pretty good and was comfortable after getting it adjusted for my height but I don’t know that someone over 6-foot could find enough adjustment.
Sleeping bag would not fit in the bottom compartment no matter how forcefully I tried to pack it in bit by bit.
The top compartment is convenient but the small opening to the rather small main compartment made it difficult to load and unload. Overall it doesn’t hold very much gear. Glad the hike was only 2 miles in for a single overnight.

Great pack. I go 6′4" and this bacpac fits snug with the curve of the spine.
good fitment. straps have plenty of adjustment length. plenty of pockets to store things and plenty of exterior points for attaching……more stuff.

I bought this for my wife who had not done much back packing before, and it worked out great. Very light and comfortable. It doesn’t have a huge internal capacity, but it was perfect for a 4 days trip. Good pack fo the price.

Leadership For Deep Results: A New Look At Your Career

I’ve challenged all leaders I have worked with during the past two decades to achieve more results faster continually.

They can get on track to start achieving such results not by working harder and longer but by slowing down and using Leadership Talks on a daily basis.

However, I also tell them that getting on the more-results-faster-continually track is not an end but a beginning. They must then begin focusing not just on the quantity and speed of results but the kind of results they aim to achieve.

There are roughly two kinds of results, standard results and deep results. Most leaders understand standard results but fail to come to grips with deep results. In fact, these leaders go through their entire careers getting the former, but they don’t have a clue about the latter. Of course, standard results are necessary. But in the long run, they are far less important than deep results.

We know what standard results are. They are the results we must get in our jobs, such as: speed, productivity, operations efficiencies, sales closes, sales leads, sales to new customers, failure prevention, health and safety advancements, quality, training, quality control, logistics efficiencies, marketing targets, new revenue streams, sales erosion, price calibrations, cost reductions, demand flow activities and technologies, inventory turns, cycle time reductions, materials and parts management, etc.

Whereas achieving standard results enables us to do a better job and have a better career, deep results are different. Deep results are about being better leaders and human beings.

Of course, being a better leader will have a positive impact on your job and your career. But there is something else involved: Being a better leader means being a better person. Who we are as a leader and who we are as a person should be the same thing. If they’re not, we diminish both our leadership and the person we are.

Look at it this way: Standard results are about doing; deep results are about being. Our most important achievements as leaders are not just what we achieve but who we become in that achieving.

For instance, if we don’t get standard results in our job, we fail in that job or at least in that particular aspect of the job.

But in the realm of deep results, such failure might lead to success if in that failure, we find a better way to lead, a way to be better.

Here are some ways deep results differ from standard results.

–Deep results emerge over longer periods of time.

–Deep results encompass wider circles outside your job, usually impacting your family, friends, and relatives.

–Deep results are often not conventionally successful results. They can come in the guise of failure.

–Deep results can’t be quantified. They’re usually a quality of living or being.

–Deep results are often not immediately apparent. Usually, you become aware of them after they appear and sometimes long after they appear.

–Deep results are formed in your inner life and the choices you make over the things you control, your opinions, aspirations, and desires.

–Deep results shape, and are shaped by, character.

How does one go about getting deep results? There are many paths up this mountain. But one path is straight and steep and clear. That is the path of the Leadership Imperative.

I WILL LEAD PEOPLE IN SUCH A WAY THAT WE TOGETHER NOT ONLY ACHIEVE THE RESULTS WE NEED BUT THEY ALSO BECOME BETTER AS LEADERS AND AS PEOPLE.

The Imperative has two parts: one is results-accomplishments and the other is self betterment.

You are never more powerful as a leader as when, in getting results, you are helping others be better than they are — even better than thought they could be. Guided by the Leadership Imperative, you’ll find yourself realizing deep results.

Deep results are not a measurement or a direction. They are not a central purpose. They are a process of being. They are not something achieved. They are an achieving ? taking place not at a special place in a special time but at every place at all times.

You are deep results before you know that you are. Though deep results are easy, though often they do not come easily.

The task that we shoulder reveals our heart to the world. Deep results show our soul to the world.

Examples of deep results:

–With the disasters of the Franco-Prussia War tumbling down upon Paris, a remarkable event took place, the word of which spread like wildfire through the city. The great author Victor Hugo, exiled for 19 years, had come back to Paris. Traveling through German lines, through the war-ravaged countryside, he had come into the city on virtually the last train. He had come to share the sufferings with the Parisians in their darkest hour when his arriving meant virtual imprisonment in the city. Throngs gathered at the station to applaud him. One man shouted over the crowd, If defeat brings us Victor Hugo, we couldn’t be better rewarded! ? deep results.

–Doug Collins, member of the ‘72 U.S. Olympic team that ultimately lost the gold medal on a disputed call to the Soviet Union, describes the dramatic moments at the end of the game. We’re losing by one. The Soviets have the ball. The clock’s running out. I hide behind the center, bait a guy into throwing a pass, knock it loose and grab it. A Russian goes under me as I’m going up for the lay-up. I’m KO’d for a second. The coaches run to me. John Bach, one of the assistants, says, ‘We gotta get somebody to shoot the fouls. But coach Hank Iba says, ‘If Doug can walk, he’ll shoot.’ That electrified me. The coach believed in me. I can’t even remember feeling any pressure. Three dribbles, spin the ball, toss it in, same as in my backyard. I hit ‘em both and got the lead. I didn’t know what I was made of until then. ?deep results.

–Herb Rammrath, a General Electric client of mine in the late 1980s, told me this. I was a young Naval officer reporting with many other new sailors aboard an aircraft carrier. The captain met us in a formation on the flight deck. He shook my hand and went down the line greeting many other sailors. I didn’t think anything of it until several weeks later when he passed by me in a passageway. He said, ?Hi, Herb!’ I never forgot that. He remembered my name despite the fact that he had met scores of new sailors that day. It’s made a tremendous impact on me till this day. ?deep results.

–Seeing abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison dragged with a rope down a Boston Street, Wendell Phillips became so outraged that he joined the abolitionist movement and became one of its most effective activists. ?deep results.

Many people go through their careers ignorant of deep results. But when you view your career as a whole, don’t you think that the ultimate yardstick of your life should be deep results?

Deep results are not about getting but giving, not about doing but becoming, not about material accumulation but about self-enrichment and the enrichment of human relationships. From now on, when thinking about getting results in your jobs and your career, think too of the deep results you should achieve.
