Camping Tents

The word ‘camping’ brings to mind vivid images of rugged peaks, a gurgling stream, lush woods and, of course, a camping tent.

Camping tents come in a wide variety of sizes, qualities and colors. Usually available in dome, tetragon, apex and tunnel shapes, these tents vary in prices too. There are tents available for the amateur camper as well as the professional expeditionary. However, since records suggest that many tourists usually choose camping over an expensive vacation at a seaside resort, largely to cut costs, camping tents are usually not very exorbitantly priced, although, some camping tents are showcased as a luxurious high-living commodity.

Camping tents are mostly light in weight and are very flexibly built with waterproof material ranging between nylon, silicone, polyurethane and so on. They are specially built to be highly transportable and can be easily bundled off in your average family truck.

The potential buyer is spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing his type of camping tent. Some campers need a lot of space and feel claustrophobic within a constricted area. Keeping such consumers in mind, the industry has come up with a large variety of camping tents in which the camper does not have to let go of elbow space. On the other hand, pup-tents or bivy sacks are available for campers who require very little space and can make do with just a sleeping bag. The large ones sometimes include kitchens, toilets and store rooms, with enough space not only for people but also for pets, while the small ones may sometimes be accompanied with a little patio that can be folded.

Most camping tents are designed for round the year use and are very carefully built so that the tent is able to withstand hail, slate, strong winds, blinding rain and so on. While camping tents are available in bright colors, if the camper wants to go unnoticed in wilderness, it is best if he chooses hues that might help him to camouflage.

Before buying a camping tent however, there are a few things to be remembered.

The camper should see how easy it is to carry his chosen tent. There should be some space within the tent to hang camping gear. Reflective points should be there for effective visibility at night. If such things are kept in mind, it will possibly result in a good buy, which might in turn result in a perfect camping vacation.

I have researched all of the magnesium, fire steel, fire starting devices, and decided the fire steel has the best reviews by far. And out of all of the fire steel devices, this one is the best! It’s a good price, and man is it THICK! Looking at the picture, many of them look like they could snap at any minute, but this picture made this one look thicker. And it is! It’s so thick, I feel like I could really scrape it 12000 times like they said. It’s so cool. Scrape off the paint, and instant sparks! This is the kind of thing that you should probably practice before you use, at least practice getting sparks. If you are like me you will be excited when you get it in the mail and want to try it out. So I suggest taking the time to try and start a fire with this. The best thing is always to get your own tinder for something like camping, dryer lint, etc. But for an emergency supply, I suggest having something else. Get some magnesium dust, or a magnesium stick that you can scrape and use the scrapings. I bought WetFire tinder from REI because the ratings are one of the best as far as tinder goes. Each cube is individually wrapped, which prevents water from getting to them. Plus they start when they get wet or when its cold. Some products say that they also do this, but the reviews will tell you differently. Anyways, WetFire tinder gives you eight separately wrapped cubes, and in each cube you can use a small piece to give yourself a good amount of use. Check it out! Great to have in emergency, or when you are camping and it rains. Burns when wet! Good luck!

Every outdoorsman loves a fire. But sometimes, outdoorsmen NEED one. That is when you realize there is nothing quite like a big fire-steel to get the job done.

Matches are convenient but don’t work at all when when wet and most do not work so well in wind, either. Waterproofing them with wax works fine if you use them within a few months. But I found out the hard way that if you store them away for much longer than that, the match-heads just smear into mush when you try to strike them.

Disposable butane lighters are another popular option for fire-starting and work fine in fair weather. But try using them when "freight-train" winds are blowing and you learn how quickly foul weather can snatch away a flame. The same goes for all but the best ("NATO" or "Lifeboat") matches.

Fire-steels, on the other hand, will always work. Though the term "flint" is often heard in describing them they are actually made of a metal alloy similar to that used in traditional cigarette lighters. And what a lot of people don’t realize is that their sparks are much hotter than the open flame of traditional matches or lighters.

Since the chemical structure of this alloy is quite stable, you can store a fire-steel away indefinitely and it will still spark. You can get one sopping wet, and it makes no difference. They always work. And if you have never used one it is a revelation how easily they will ignite good tinder.

The Light My Fire Army Model Fire-Steel is a hefty 3/8" in diameter and throws a LOT of sparks. Rain or shine.

Recommended.

If your plane goes down in the middle of a forest or a desert island, you’ll be glad you have one of these babies :) I tried it on dry leaves, wet leaves, fatwood, it lit everything. Way to go, Light My Fire!

The first time I used this product it worked as advertised.
The second time, while sparking, the item came apart. It sliped out of the tan handle(knob remained in my hand) I searched in the dark umg. Found it and started my fire. Could have been ugly. Will try to glue back into handle because its hard to hold onto without it.

The item shipped quickly. It took a while to get the hang of it but it works great.

In The Woods

I went for a glorious walk in the woods near my house today. Interestingly, I have lived in this neighborhood for over 20 years, but it was just a few months ago that I discovered this fabulous treasure right outside my door.

I?ve always enjoyed the paved walking trails that crisscross through my neighborhood?s greenbelt. Often I saw mountain bikers emerging from the woods, and I wondered about the trails back there. But since I didn?t know where the trails led, I never went into those woods. After all, I might get lost. A mountain biker might run me over. It might not be safe. So I stuck to the paved trails and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

But a few months ago my friend Deborah, who I walk with most every week, suggested we go on one of the off-road trails. She and her husband had spent many hours exploring those trails, so she felt confident she could get us out alive. So we plunged into the woods and I discovered what I had been missing all those years. To my surprise, I found 16 miles of cleared trails winding through dense woods, past occasional creeks and small waterfalls.

I loved it! I enjoyed walking on the varied terrain, watching out for rocks and tree roots, climbing up and down small inclines. It felt like an adventure, like I had traveled to a distant state park rather than my own backyard.

I told Deborah I would probably only go in the woods when we were walking together, as I still felt unsure about where the different trails led. But it wasn?t long before the woods called me, and I took a trail walk on my own.

Now I go on walks through the woods frequently. Once I got a taste of how nice it was, I was willing to risk getting lost (which I never have) for the joy of being in the peace and quiet of nature. To think, those lovely wooded trails were waiting for me all those years, just a stone?s throw from my house. Although I knew the trails were there, I didn?t think they applied to me or appealed to me. But I was wrong.

It?s good to be content with what you have, but each of us is destined for more. For twenty years I thoroughly enjoyed walking on the paved trails in my neighborhood, but it?s been a huge bonus to discover the miles of undiscovered off-road trails as well.

What unrecognized blessings are ?hiding? in plain sight in your life? What talents are lying dormant in you? Take a look around and see where you might be selling yourself short in life. Step up to the plate, take a risk, and you just might find a new level of peace and happiness beyond your wildest dreams.
