Are Christians Powerful Enough to Stop Global Warming

There is a television advertisement from an Evangelical group that shows pictures of a lot of damage done by nature: too much water, too much wind, and not enough water. The voice on the ad says “The good news is that with God’s help, we can stop global warming, for our kids, our world, and for our Lord.”

It quickly caught my attention.

I can stop global warming? I barely have enough strength to stop eating when I’m no longer hungry! And when it comes to chewing on my cuticles, well, there is no stopping me there. And exercise? I can barely get myself to the gym 3-days a week.

But, I can stop the earth and its atmosphere from warming up?

Do they want me to adopt an iceberg and place it in protective custody in my freezer? Do they want me to quit exercising so I don’t sweat so much and breathe in so much air (that’s something I may be able to get on board with!)?

I am a big believer in the environment and protecting it. I have been blessed to enjoy many of our national parks that have been set aside by environmental efforts. I enjoy the outdoors through hiking, shooting, fishing, camping, and boating. I hate to litter and wish I had a license to thrash people who trash this world.

On the other hand, I am pretty sure that God has things in control and that in the context of the 6,000 years or so that the earth has been in mankind’s hands that God is not wringing His hands wondering if we are going to help Him keep this planet successfully populated with His creation.

The bad news is that the weather has devastated mankind from the very beginning of the world. As Christians, how we got to this place where we think we can change the course of the weather bewilders me.

The good news is that God is in control and that in the midst of tragedy, created either by man or this earth, that God is there calling us to a place of intimacy and eternity with Him.
