Mountain Biking Apparel - Getting Into Gear!

Do you need special mountain biking apparel in order to ride a bike? Of course not! You will be able to ride without the specifically designed shorts, gloves, socks, and shoes. However, suitable gear enables you to get real enjoyment from the sport, and to perform at your peak.

Mountain biking apparel isn’t just about looking good. It is about clothing performing well in any weather, and under difficult mountain biking conditions. The ideal gear allows the rider to get on with the ride, instead of being hampered by inadequate protection.

The basic items of mountain biking apparel needed for riding are gloves, shorts, socks, shoes, sunglasses, and a protective helmet.

Gloves are available in full or half finger types, and both have padding where you need it to prevent your hands from going numb. In addition, gloves will protect your hands in case of a fall.

Shorts come in two styles, baggy or tight. Lycra is the preferred material for mountain biking apparel. Both have padding to protect your backside, and prevent numbness. If you have a favorite pair of ordinary shorts you want to wear, look for the padded underwear that will allow you to do this, while still offering protection.

Cycling socks are slightly thinner than regular athletic socks, and are made of special wicking material to keep your feet dry. Socks also protect your ankles, and should always be part of your mountain biking apparel.

The shoes forming part of mountain biking apparel, have one important feature: SDP compatibility. This means that they have a rigid sole, and an area that will hold the cleats for a clipless pedal. The shoe is then attached to the bike. The sole’s lack of flexibility means that you can keep an even pressure on the pedal.

Shoes come in many different styles. They range from something similar to a hiking boot, to lighter shoes in racing style.

The helmet is the most important piece of mountain biking apparel. This essential item’s safety considerations makes it a must-have. It can be a life-saving piece of equipment. When choosing a helmet, look for a good fit. Always ensure that it has the certification it needs to provide vital head-protection.

When buying quality mountain biking apparel, asking the right questions may save you money in the long run.

You need to know if the fabric used in the mountain biking apparel, is designed to ‘wick’. This means that the fabric has the characteristic of removing moisture from the skin to the outer layer of the material, where it can dry more easily. This is the only way to keep the rider cool and comfortable.

You may also want to ask if the mountain biking apparel has a zip in the front for extra air flow, and pockets in the back for keeping maps, snacks or other necessities. Comfort and convenience go hand in hand.

You also need to know if the mountain biking apparel has invisible seams. This is essential to prevent chafing and rubbing on your skin. It will make your ride far more comfortable and improve endurance. If buying a jersey, whether short or long sleeved, make sure that it fits well, and can be left hanging over your shorts.

If you are riding in wet, windy and cold weather, a jacket may become an important mountain biking apparel item. Look at the stitching, the zips, and the fabric in terms of durability. It will need to balance water resistance with the ability to aid sweat loss. A well-designed jacket will have zips that open up under your armpit, to let cool air in when needed.

As a serious rider, you will be training throughout the year in all weather conditions. It is therefore important to look at layering mountain biking apparel. Cannondale has produced some well-designed layering systems. They use technically advanced materials to aid the competitive rider.

Your goal is to feel comfortable to such an extent, that you are able to forget all about mountain biking apparel. Enjoy the ride!

Habits and Success

I got a big reminder over the last couple of weeks about
what happens when you let your good habits slip - and
how easy it is to fall into the trap of being overwhelmed.

This week when I am getting back into the habit of having
the dishes cleaned up before I go to bed, eating healthy,
and actually getting to bed at a reasonable hour, I am
seeing again what a difference it makes in my
productivity.

We all get in those periods in our life when we feel like
we’re accomplishing a lot more by letting other things
slide - when actually the opposite is true.

When you let the housework slide, the work you have to
put into getting things back in order is horrendous.

Though you think you’re saving time by grabbing some
fast-food, you’re really not saving much time and you’re
cutting your energy reserves down when you need them
the most.

When you push yourself to work that last couple of hours,
even though you could pass out any minute - you’re working
much slower and making more mistakes. If you go to bed and
get the rest you need, the work would get done much faster.

Funny how these things work, isn’t it?

So as tempted as I’ve been to let my business slide for
a couple of days, I won’t. I don’t want to get in that
habit. I don’t have to put in 8 - 10 - 12 hours everyday,
but there are things that need to be done everyday.

It reminds me of a picture that Zig Ziglar talked about on
one of his old tapes. It was about using a water pump when
you’re camping. You can pump and pump and pump and not see
much in the way of results. If you stop, the water drops
back down to where it was when you started and you have to
start all over again. If you had just continued a few pumps
longer, you would have had your water.

I was reading an installment in another self improvement
course this week where the author talked about belief. You
know, one of those believe and it will come true sort of
things. Belief is important when you’re trying to reach
your goals, but it’s really hard to believe when your
habits are out of whack.

Does that make sense to you?

A Better Life? It’s All About The Choices You Make

You can choose to eat right or choose to be overweight.

You can choose to take care of your home or let it go.
You can choose to exercise or watch TV.

You can choose to do something or nothing.

Get in good habits. Then you’ll feel good about yourself
and what you can accomplish.

Six Foot Nine Shadow and the Mosh Pit for Two

Two Hours to Kennybunck Port and I still have another two hours until I reach Lewiston. After a pit stop to the Popeyes at exit 4 off the Maine Pike, I find myself a bit late. They have been waiting for an hour, even though I did not mention what time I would arrive. Also I am Caught a little unexpected, I figured that some one else would be driving the rest of the way. Money is tight this month and I am driving a 67 Chrysler New Yorker with a 440 and a leak in the gas tank with two feet of snow that is taking its time to blow off. But off we go, me and my shadow.

As any true shadow, he is always to be found near, slightly elongated, and always placing you in the sun. For you are always warm with him around. He is much like a Loki, a giant amongst the Gods who keep them all laughing and humble. For the joke is usually on them. But innocent as a child’s is his digs as he goes about his days with a crow feather in his cap.

Later after some misdirections, miss-turns, misdemeanors, and missed comments; I realize that it was me that was missed after all. The shadow has grown, but not as much as I had expected. The sun is setting soon and the shadow is only six foot nine. He sits crouched low inside my whale of a car, and strikes up his tune. As I listen I wonder how long I have known him. At the rest stop where they caught me off guard, one son was almost unrecognizable and the other was too familiar. The fore-mentioned face kept face-shifting between three of his kin. As an assemblage of his family tree. I have chased, tickled, and instigated this pair since childhood and now in a year or two I am going to be able to share a bar stool with them. Now I look over and he is smiling. He tells me he has enough for gas money. Now I am relieved. Because now I can return him to his mother without hitch hiking.

We pull into this dirt parking lot. It had everything , including the pot holes. We sit in the car and watch the line grow to the north of us. In no time the line retains its length, but turns west like a swinging door to allow the traffic to pass. Luck had it so that it swung right to our passenger door. AJ , that’s the shadow, just opened his door and got into line.

The interior of the Central Maine Civic Center of Lewiston, was more reminiscent of teamster pulls at the state fair than a Rock concert. It actually ended up being a Quad-A hockey rink. I kept expecting the heat of the crowd on top of the rows of plywood to give. With only one blow up doll (to be had as a inflatable safety device) spotted in the crowd, I think the rest of us would be in trouble.

The opening bands sucked. The first band should of kept their air guitar playing to their closet. For if God found them doing it in the open confides of their bedroom, he would had them killed on the spot. Do not pass go, sorrry! You sucked! Then there was the draw back to being tall that we both felt. Standing in any given place too long is murder on our lower backs. Some might think we were swaying to the music, but in all actuality we were switching our weight from foot to foot to ease the pain. The only Highlight AJ found was the female lead to the second band flashing him the largest cherries on melons he had ever seen. Coming from a purveyor of St. Catherine Street, It is saying something! Come to have it, AJ has been known to have a radar for these things at concerts. Eh, eh, eh breasts at 4 o’clock!

Then the head liner came on, after two hours of shit where I was one of four that was old enough to drink in the room or grow a mustache. They played an excellent set that got my feet moving. Thank God for the Six foot nine shadow. For anyone to see behind AJ, they had to clear any empty lunette pattern behind him as far as his shadow would fall. Excellent dancing space for one. But eventually I had to turn it into a mosh pit for two. I had originally planned it to be more inclusive. But my freaky looks and AJ’s bulk persuaded others from joining. They just moved back and gave us a fifty foot diameter circle just to knock each other around in. Two thousand people shoulder to shoulder, back to back and we have a fifty foot diameter circle cleared just incase AJ wanted to do his crazy dance. For the shadow came this close to doing his crazy dance, but he thought better for the safety of the innocent bystanders. I am not exactly sure what it would entail, but the crowd was not taking any chances. But they gave us our moment, just to bash the shit out of each other. Something , after our concussions subsides, we can remember as our special little place in the sun.

The family when I first got involved with them as a unit was after their divorce from their father. AJ especially was kept as the fathers shadow, something you always kept the light on so as not to be seen. But AJ always had the sun follow wherever he went. It seemed that the whole family was seen by the father as only an attachment of him. And AJ was his shadow side. So I do not know what that says of the father.

The day after the concert we went climbing a snow-bank unto this dune. But It was not solid, and we kept sinking into it up to our crotches as we hunted for the boulders to stand upon. As we walked the beach with my shoes-no socks full of snow, my feet stayed warm walking and talking with him. He mentioned other elders that have been placed in his life. Elders that kept him up to date on surfing, contents of mysterious islands, and the Jersey Devil. Supposedly, only whenever one of his teachers returns to Jersey is the devil spotted. For this teacher believes he is the devil himself. AJ is graced with the gift of many, I think as I watch him draw a bearded hairy happy face in the sand. Where one was taken away, many have stepped in to extend his shadow. For in Ancient Ireland, a mother would give her child to her brother and a community to foster.

AJ has always been a bit ancient in his ways. An unexpected sage, of grounding advice. Advice that stays constant, no matter the hustle and bustle of whatever age he may find himself. A soul that speaks loud enough even advise from the womb. He is an old soul who had heeded Jimmy Stewart’s advice in the film Harvey, ” My mother told me long ago, that you either be ever so smart or ever so pleasant. I have tried being ever so smart and I prefer now being pleasant.”. Come to think of it, AJ is a bit of a pookah himself. There is just no ear holes in his hat. Just a crow feather worn forward.

So if you ever find yourself in a large looming shadow, just remember that the sun is near and you are always welcome into his mosh pit for two.

P.s. If you ever find an old Chrysler on the side of the road, just have a gas can ready to help the serene bearded freak up the road get home in his sandals.

Hero’s Journey - Dances with Wolves (1990)

From our deconstructions of hundreds of Hollywood blockbusters at www.managing-creativity.com/

Dances with Wolves is another successful story that follows the Hero’s Journey template almost by the book. Mirroring the Hero’s Journey template allows the screenwriter to write effective screenplays and stories.

1. Hero’s strength of character; nature [John Dunbar pulls his boots over his soon to be amputated leg].

2. Introduce a Supernatural Aid / Mentor [the General on the hill top].

3. Hero commits an extraordinary act [suicide sequence; John's fellow soldier initiates the Call to Adventure] the soldier’s reactions provide the Refusal].

4. Mentor recognizes the Hero as such and offers magical gifts (John Dunbar’s desire to see the frontier before it’s gone; Cisco the faithful horse and promotion].

5. Hero begins his journey [trip to Fort Hayes with Cisco].

6. Meeting the Threshold Guardian [the officer who commits suicide]. Warnings of danger [can drive you insane - like the officer].

7. Journey to the First Threshold with the (dangerous) Joker.

8. Danger of the journey developed; references to an antagonism [John finds skeletons along the way; killed by Indian arrows].

9. Character and natures of the Hero and Joker developed [camping sequence].

10. The magical nature of the First Threshold (this New World we are entering) illustrated [we see the majesty of the prairies].

11. Foreshadow of the adventure ["Indians are nothing but thieves and beggars"].

12. Hero arrives at the First Threshold. It is foreboding, dangerous and unwelcoming. But the Hero sees value there. There is resistance to entering [the Joker won't stay; John Dunbar has to pull a gun on him].

13. There is no way back [the Joker departs].

14. The Hero feels strangely comfortable with the decision he has made.

15. Hero is wary of danger in the First Threshold [John is edgy - he pulls a gun on Cisco].

16. Danger illustrated [John finds a dead dear].

17. Hero overcomes initial doubts and fears [gives the dead deer a funeral; he literarily burns them].

18. Hero aware of an antagonism [John Dunbar realizes that the smoke may attract the Indians].

19. We are introduced to an Antagonism [the Pawnee].

20. The danger of the Antagonism illustrated [the Pawnee kill the Joker].

21. Hero enters deeper into the First Threshold and meets an ally [John begins to get comfortable and meets Two Socks].

22. Hero in the Belly of the First Threshold and becomes familiar with his ally [John completely at home and the relationships with Two Socks is developed].

23. Hero meets a new Mentor. The hero does not recognize the Mentor but the Mentor is aware of him on some level [Kicking Bird runs away - he knows white people inhabit this place and are coming in increasing numbers].

It’s All In the Eyes (Well, Mostly) Easy Snake Identification

Most people living in urban areas probably have not encountered a snake. Chances are you never will. Even a move to the ‘burbs might not produce any snake encounters. Though the chance of meeting the very common garter snake does increase.

Whether you meet your first snake in your backyard or on a hiking path in the forest, you will want to determine whether it is venomous or non-venomous. Expect for the very curious and studious, this is all that should concern the novice snake hunter.

In the United States of America there is one key characteristic that sets venomous snakes apart from non-venomous snakes. That trait is the eyes.

Venomous snakes have vertical slits for pupils. Sometimes these are called cat eyes. Non-venomous snakes have round pupils.

Do you have to get close to a snake to really tell the shape of its pupils?

Of course, you can’t at one hundred feet. But you can be a good twenty to thirty feet away and get a good look at a snakes eyes without putting oneself in harms way.

There is one exception to this rule. The coral snake has round pupils but is extremely venomous. Fortunately the coral snake is easy to identify because it is one of the most colorful of North American snakes. It is colored in yellow, black and red bands. However, the coral snake has a copycat brethren that has the same colors. The king snake is the coral snakes non-venomous counterpart. How can you tell whether that colorful snake is the poisonous coral or the safe king snake? It come by looking at the order of the colored bands. Remember this poem:

Red on black/safe for Jack

Red on yellow/ Will kill a fellow

Remember too that sometimes the “yellow” of the coral snake is almost “white”.

Coral snakes only live in the very southern portions of the United States and a portion of southwestern states. So if you live in the North, snake identification for venomous snakes is based completely on the eyes.

So the key in basic snake identification is the eyes. Fortunately, the other basic identifier of color, belongs to one of the most colorful snakes there is. So the next time you are walking through the woods enjoying the color of the trees and you see a snake, look for its eyes!

Frank Stevens writes often about various aspects of home and outdoor life. If you have a problem with snakes in your own backyard you can find out how to get rid of snakes from his handy website.

Golf Fees in the Bahamas

Taking some time off from your busy work and spending it on your favorite hobby is probably the best gift that you can give to yourself. You know how much it takes to earn money-working overtime, under pressure, and sometimes neglecting significant events such as your birthday or your wedding anniversary. You will eventually appreciate your hard work if you know how to take some time off and spend it with your favorite hobby-whether camping and water skiing in the great lakes of good old USA or fishing on the nearby pond. It provides enjoyment as well as relaxation for the next several days before going back to your busy work once again.

Probably one of your favorite pastimes during weekends is playing golf with the rest of your friends. Taking a tee and landing an ‘eagle’ will really put a smile on your face and laughter on the air.

Hey, is it a good idea to take a week off and enjoy golfing on the beautiful country of the Bahamas? The excellent championship courses make the Bahamas one of the exciting golfing destinations, whether you are a beginner or you are a golf enthusiast for several years now. Aside from the green golfing courses of the country, the clear blue skies make a perfect condition to hit some fantastic rounds of golf.

Golf became one of the attractions in the Bahamas after the construction of the Cable Beach Golf Club at Nassau in the 1920s. Such beach golf club is exclusive for rich American families who frequently spend their vacation on the island. The next 30 to 40 years is vital in the development of several golf courses across the island. It is now the home of numerous golf courses, with some of them rated to be ‘golf championship courses’.

If you will visit The Bahamas for your golfing vacation, you will find a wide variety of golf courses, ranging from beginners to more experienced golf players. Golf fees depend on the season and on the location. There are many courses attached to resorts, and every golfer is advised to check with the course of their choice for applicable information and set up a tee time in advance to be accommodated, especially during peak seasons.

As previously mentioned, golf fees varies from season and on the location. Here are some of the popular golf courses in The Bahamas with their corresponding ‘green fees’:

1) Treasure Cay Golf Course located at Abaco, Treasure Cay Golf Course has a total of 6,985 yards from the blue tees and comes with 66 strategically-placed sand bunkers. It provides an excellent challenge for golfers because of its tight fairways, ocean winds, and unique layout that will make you ponder every club selection. Unlimited golf fees usually starts at $60, exclusive of other golf packages.

2) Bahamas Princess Emerald and Ruby Golf Courses it has 18 holes, par-72.5 bunkers per hole, and water on 11 holes. In addition, the 9th hole in the Emerald course takes the honor as the toughest hole on the whole island. Why? See it for yourself. Unlimited green fees and 18-hole cart starts as $62.

3) Fortune Hills Golf and Country Club it is a 9-hole championship golf course built in 1971. It is considered to be the centerpiece of an elegant golf and country club community setting. The design provides challenging holes due to some elevated greens. Golf fees for this course starts from $51 for the 9-hole and additional $35 with caddy and cart. The club rental for 18 holes is at $15 with 10.5 percent off if you have condominium rentals.

You will not just enjoy your golfing vacation at the Bahamas. You will be able to save substantial amounts of money from traveling to far places in search for a world-class golf course. The Bahamas got it, in a price not too heavy on your pockets.

In fact, for those that love to fish, there are fishing resorts that one can visit and vacation at. Thus, there are prime spots for everyone to fish! Moreover, many fishing resorts are easily affordable, all you need to do is bring along your equipment!

Now imagine just as many offerings in other states and you can see the number of opportunities one can find to vacation and fish!

Some resorts offer hotels, while others offer cabins and a campground for quite relaxation. You can spend time on the beach or when you are not about to fish, you can spend time touring all the local hot spots and attractions. Cabins can be rustic or modern and will provide visitors with the ultimate sense of “living in the wilderness” and many of the cabins are large enough to handle big groups of people. Some cabins have a porch where one can sit and see the scenic views as the sun sets and twilight settles in. Cabins that are fully furnished with most everything one would require for comfort can be easily rented for a week or more and give the entire family a vacation worth remembering.

Some resorts and lodges also supply extra curricular activities to engage in when you are not fishing the waters. So, if you are planning to fish this vacation, your best bet is to visit a resort or lodge and get all of your entertainment needs met at one location. Moreover, your accommodatios will be waiting and ready for you and you will find yourself wanting to visit such resorts each and every year.

Three’s Company (Season 4) DVD Review

Bursting onto the television landscape in Spring 1977, Three’s Company quickly skyrocketed in the ratings - cracking the top 8 every season except its last. Sporting a plethora of quirky characters and fresh writing talent that explored modern day issues, the show held its own as one of the funniest programs on TV. Picking up where All In The Family left off, Three’s Company delved into the social taboos of its day, dealing with subjects such as homosexuality, racism, sexual harassment, and of course, unmarried men and women living together But the true success of Three’s Company stemmed from the comic talents of John Ritter and Suzanne Somers who became instant stars as a result of their respective roles on the show

In Three’s Company, John Ritter plays the role of Jack Tripper, a young cooking student in San Diego who wants to move into an apartment with his two female friends - the far more mature Janet Wood (Joyce DeWitt) and the blonde and ditsy Chrissy Snow (Suzanne Somers). But the three friends face the possible wrath of landlord Stanley Roper (Norman Fell), an old-fashioned guy who would never allow such an arrangement. With the aid of Roper’s wife Helen (Audra Lindley), the three manage to convince Stanley that Jack is gay (when he is, in fact, a notorious ladies man). Jack’s friend Larry (Richard Kline) also fashions himself a player on the local singles scene, and he makes regular appearances on the show. Following Season 3, Stanley and Helen left the show in pursuit of their own spin-off titled The Ropers. Don Knotts (of Andy Griffith Show fame) was brought in to play the new landlord, Mr. Furley - a na

Tips on Digital Nature Photography

It is always great to one with nature. Taking a hike through the woods or camping out near the lake can do this as a way to relax from the complexities of work or school.

The sunrise or sunset out in the countryside is immeasurable than it is seen in the city. Maybe it’s the mountains or the trees that make the difference and people who want to capture the moment should have a digital camera along so a picture can be taken.

Here are some tips to be able to take those great pictures in the wild.

1. The digital camera comes with a zoom lens. If the person sees a deer or some other animal, it is best to use this feature because going too close can scare the creature away and the perfect shot.

2. Still shots are great but this could be better when the person is able to get multiple shots of the animals when it is moving. This can be done by catching it on video or snapping it fast especially if the unit comes with a fast shutter speed.

3. Hunting takes a bit of patience before the person is able to shoot at a target. The same thing is done when taking a picture so the individual must find a nice spot, remain hidden and just wait for animal to pass by.

4. The person must never use flash when taking pictures of the animals. This will startle it and make it run away enabling the individual to only have one shot making it impossible to do again.

5. Some people think that giving the animal food to get a better shot is a good idea. This should never be done because these creatures may attack. The person may have seen this on television captured on an amateur video at the zoo, which could be much worse, should this happen in the wild.

Shooting the animal with a digital camera can happen if the proper steps are taken. This includes doing it at different angles, doing it quietly, exercising patience and without flash.

Any digital camera will work to get this done. Those who want to buy a high tech free version are free to do so.

The person will have to practice often to get the hang of things to make this hobby into an art form. After all, it is only through practice and experience that lectures on photography especially about nature can be mastered.
